Check out my latest article in the Irish Independent. Explaining the difference between Pregnancy Yoga and Pregnancy Pilates and preparation for labour and birth.

In May 2011 I gave birth to my first daughter Clodagh.  I had a wonderful pain free pregnancy, short labour, a drug free natural birth and a very quick recovery.  I credit this wholeheartedly to a daily Yoga and Pilates practice throughout my pregnancy. I am qualified to teach Pre Natal Yoga with Yoga Therapy Ireland and I have studied both Pre Natal Pilates and Post Natal Pilates with STOTT Pilates. I am very enthusiastic to pass on to expectant mothers my positive experience of prenatal yoga and prenatal Pilates and how this facilitates healthy pregnancy and a gentle birth. Why do Pregnancy Yoga Classes during Pregnancy:
Every pregnancy is different and yoga practices can be adapted to fit the needs of each individual. Regular practice of yoga breathing techniques, relaxation, meditation and gentle posture work support the mother during the stages of her pregnancy. This results in increased confidence, strength, stamina and skills to cope with the demands of labour. See below for some more yoga tips for pregnancy.

Why do Pregnancy Pilates Classes during Pregnancy:
Many women find Pilates to be one of best exercises to do, both during and after their pregnancy. One the top reasons Pilates and pregnancy go together so well is that Pilates is great at building core strenght. If your abdominals, back and pelvic floor are toned, they will support a more comfortable pregnancy and delivery. Another great reason to do Pilates in pregnancy is that Pilates is very adaptable. Most Pilates exercises can be modified as your body and abilities change.

Pregnancy Yoga Classes or Pregnancy Pilates Classes
First Trimester:
During the first three months of pregnancy care must be taken to allow the pregnancy to stabilise.
Relaxation, meditation, simple breath work are recommended for this trimester especially for those new to yoga. These techniques help women to cope with the possible side effects of pregnancy e.g. tiredness, nausea. Women who have been practising yoga for some time may be able to continue a normal asana practice, adapting the pace and the posture work to their needs.

Second  Trimester:
During the second three months, most women enjoy a new burst of energy and will find yoga postures useful to strengthen the body and improve posture and stamina. Classic yoga postures need to be adapted to avoid constricting the baby or straining the mother. Relaxation, visualisation, meditation and simple breath work continue to be of value to conserve energy in the mother and develop the bond with the growing baby.
During the second and the last three months of pregnancy, women practising yoga find the need to use cushions and props to allow them to be comfortable during posture work relaxation etc

Third Trimester:
During the last trimester the pace must be gentle with emphasis on preparing for the impending birth. It is advisable for her birthing partner to work with the mother in order to know how to support her during the delivery.A good yoga teacher will explore positions that will help the mother ride out contractions with breathing skills that support them and make delivery easier.

Pre and Post Pregnancy:
Rachel has extensive experience in both Yoga and Pilates for Pregnancy and Post Pregnancy. She has Certification from Yoga Therapy Ireland in Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga and STOTT Pilates Pre and Post Natal. She adds her own personal experience to this, having given birth to her daughter in May 2011 after a pain free pregnancy and a natural, drug free birth. Rachel teaches both Yoga and Pilates classes for pregnancy and offers one to one sessions on birth preparation, relaxation, individual Pre and Post Natal Pilates, individual Pre and Post Natal Yoga and Mummy and Baby yoga.
